Guess what? Every alphabet has its own song!
Introduction
I'm a student interested in computing and a die-hard devotee of rock bands such as Green Day, Guns N Roses, and Gallaghers’ Oasis. I not only listen to music but compose it myself with Logic Pro as my music arsenal.
With an interest in language, I’ve also devised my own unique project which incorporates both linguistics and music. It’s an original attempt to create a music language, so I hope you also check that out:)

THE TRANSLATOR
The Syntactic Ensemble is my custom project to create a new Music Language.
To aid your understanding, I built a translator/word combinator that translates
English into the music language. Each sentence component corresponds to a musical fragment.
Try clicking on the words and completing your sentence! The translator will play a musical piece that
"means" the English sentence you just made:)
BACKGROUND
My music language was primarily motivated by the intellectual desire to create a language of my own.
While searching for references, I wondered if I could use my music composition skills.
Not only did music fit my project's rationale, but my composition software was practical for designing a language prototype.
The Art of Language Invention by David Peterson provided tips for me throughout the journey
of language creation. Esperanto served as an existing example of fabricated language. In terms of music theory, I
worked with Logic Pro to examine any possible cacophony within the resulting music piece. The countless combinations were
a major challenge, but I could manage an algorithm to avoid musical discordance.
RATIONALE
The Syntactic Ensemble project means more than extraordinary music; it's designed for linguistic research.
Most nat-langs (ex.English,Korean,Spanish,etc) show a successive presentation of grammatical components; imagine the nouns and verbs
of English being presented one after the other. On the contrary, the instrumental structure of music presents all components
simultaneously; this time, imagine all instruments playing together at the same time.
One of the reasons for implementing music
was to experiment with this uniqueness. I envision my music language as a template for morphosyntactic research by investigating
how people interpret the new language.
LIMITATIONS
The music language requires an amateur ~ expert level of musical hearing to fully decode the meaning. As it is devised as
an experimental method, the language is also inefficient in terms of communication.
The current version is a prototype model. As more words are added, a more complex algorithm of music generation is necessary.
I do agree that my language needs several improvements. Still, the project was an invaluable experience in experimenting with the essence of
language: syntactic structure. The Syntactic Ensemble is not my last project, but rather a stepping-stone to further linguistic research.
In the near future, I hope to both develop this project and engage in new research to learn more about the realm of language.
